Vietnam is a curious cultural mix that is the result of various cultural influences during its long and colorful history. During the first millennia, its culture was dominated by the Chinese culture, which was (and still is) in close territorial proximity. You can see that influence in the various temples around Vietnam, and the ideology of most of the population, which can draw influence from Confucianism. After gaining independence from China, Vietnam started rapidly expanding its territorial and cultural borders onwards to the south, to the Mekong Delta. Then came the French colonists, who further mixed up the cultural values of Vietnam, and after a while; modern, socialist Vietnam was formed. Even to this day, many Vietnamese people value traditional cultural values, which have survived for more than a millennia.
